My life took a side trail some time back....got some reading of your words to catch up on :). Nice photo at the end of your essay....to be young and idealistic sitting on a rock worn smooth with time in a ancient landscape that forever was and will forever be, I may understand more now but will I ever truly comprehend??
I do believe your sister is right about good & bad. Jill, this “life” has all been happening in the history of the human race. Good bad good bad and more good and bad. I believe the main differences between then & today are . . .
1. SOCIAL MEDIA!!! I remember so well the 70s and the Vietnam War. If we wanted to know what was happening we had to watch the 10 pm news. It was maybe a 10 minute blurb & then it was done. Remember Kent State riots?!!! Yep, a couple of 10 min blurbs yet the story is engraved in my brain. The constant outpouring of news & opinions today can completely rob us of any joy we might find in a day and most of the world is absorbing it all constantly. It is changing the human race.
2. ENVIROMENTAL. This we see & live within it.
(I recently listened to the book The Overstory. Excellent book but heart wrenching!)
I believe all we can do is to wake up each morning and our first thoughts should be “how can I find joy today?” , make a plan for it and then share it.
I do want to stay informed but I’ll be damned if I will let it ruin my day or my ability to stay strong and focused on how I can make my little world a better place. If I can keep “my wits about me” then I will have the ability to keep my local conservation people from clear cutting trees or using chemicals to kill grass along the trails. I will have a good mindset to share my knowledge, ideas and feelings with younger folks.
You’re a very compassionate young woman Jill. Hold on tight to WHO YOU ARE and how you find joy in each day. Spread your thoughts & feelings with your words. You have made a difference in my world and am sure you have in others.
Good bless. Continue to . . . Be brave and Be strong.
Interesting way to end your piece. A good way, I think. Impermanence is well-explored in Buddhism and other philosophies. Another way of putting it is that "Bad will continue, but it can never last, because nothing holds on forever."
Your article is for you to look upon with pride. Perhaps because it aligns with most of my philosophy. Rich.
The top photo is fabulous. I love rocks and snow, and this is an incredible rock face.
